I bought this Pathfinder a month and a half ago to replace a Casio Atomic Solar G-Shock whose recessed buttons had become too difficult to press without resorting to the tip of a ballpoint. My son says it's because i have fat fingers. I don't. And anyway, they're no fatter now than they were 18 months ago when I bought the G-Shock and had no trouble with the buttons. G-Shocks seem to do that. On the other hand, I beat the tar out of watches, which is why G-Shocks have always been my first choice. They really can take abuse and shrug it off. I've always felt they had everything I needed, so I was tentative about shelling out twice as much for a Pathfinder that seemed to have a lot of things i didn't need. On the other hand, I do a lot of hiking, have no sense of direction, often gear my agenda by the weather and I'm busy enough for it to matter to me how much time things take. Besides, I had to buy something.

So here, at the 50-day mark, is how that decision turned out. The PAW-1300B-4 (hereafter referred to as simply the Pathfinder) is billed as "slim," and I guess by comparison with most other expedition-type watches it is. It doesn't dwarf my wrist, but it's clearly a presence (the unnecessary bronze color may have something to do with that) and its footprint if not its thickness makes the old G-Shock look small. On the principle of bad news/good news, here's the bad news in my opinion: Some may like the bronze colored bezel; I don't hate it, but I'd have preferred simple black, which i didn't find available. The shiney black inner liner just inside the bezel has a lot of hashmarks and gradient arrows. That's frippery. And like virtually all the type on the surround of the watch the identifying type on that ring is too small to read easily. That's a function of a watch designed by folks who never tried out their designs in practice. Both the black and bronze bezels scratch immediately. Mine already has two scars, acquiring the first minutes after I opened the box. Another piece of silliness is the indigo-colored ring on the extreme outside of the face itself. A black dot travels around the indigo track indicating the passage of seconds. Why? This is a digital watch and it shows the changing seconds digits in the lower third of the face. The little indigo racetrack just absorbs dial space that could have been better used to make some of the ancillary symbols and type (which are now much too minute) larger. More self-congratulatory design candy. Space allocation in the design of the face is adequate if not optimal. For example, in barometer mode, the most useful element, the weather trend graph, is crammed into the smallest space. You can read it, but you have to squint. Meanwhile, the inches of mercury (I changed mine to those units because it's what I'm used to) numbers are huge, even though they're arguably less immediately useful. The thermometer has so far been useless. It's always higher than the true temp. If it consistently read the same amount higher than the true ambient temperature, minor mental math would make it useful. But it varies all over the map, sometimes 15 degrees too high, sometimes as many as 25. That failure disappoints me because an accurate temperature reading would have been a useful feature. I've never tried to use the altimeter feature because, frankly, I don't care how many feet above sea level I am and since I don't climb mountains, and no longer rock climb, I probably never will. The watchband, made of plastic that does not remotely look like leather, with cheap looking contrasting stitching, with a bronze accent patch and a recessed inset strip of some grey material that looks like plastic but seems to absorb water, is in my opinion another triumph of cosmetics over common sense. Of course some people will like it. Some people may even like the velcro-adjustable strap that secures the tail of the watchband. Why velcro? Why adjustable? When I rest my wrist on a desktop it feels like I've put it down on a marble. And that bulky strap invariably catches and hangs up when you pull on the sleeve of a sweat shirt or shrug into a jacket that has tight cuffs. I would have preferred the tough black resin watchband used on the G-Shock. And this little confection can't be changed for something better.

You're probably wondering why I gave the Pathfinder four stars. Okay, the good news: Casio packed a lot of functionality into a watch case that can be worn without making accommodations. I love the atomic timekeeping for obvious reasons. Ditto the solar. I think you'd have to live in a cave to have power problems. I've never had less than full power. I wear a watch to know what time it is--the digits that do that are large and easily read and the day and date are clear. It's all the key information in one shot, no buttons. Speaking of buttons, one of my prime complaints about my old G-Shock was the recessed buttons. Yes, I understand the logic. Nevertheless, inherently bad idea. By contrast, the Pathfinder buttons are large, pressed easily, and the action is crisp and positive. And I've yet to find that any of the buttons have been pressed by accident. If you orient the compass properly initially, it works quite well and matches the accuracy of my in-car compass and a lensatic compass that I've used in the past when hiking in more remote areas. The degree reading on the compass is twitchy, but it's consistent which is more important than accurate. I haven't tried it on the water yet, but it works fine for land navigation. The barometer function is where the Casio really shines. The trend graph though small has been dead accurate, maybe a little more so than my pricey bedroom weather station, and the pressure readings are remarkably close to those on the weather station.

So far I've worn this watch hiking in misty rainy conditions, while playing tennis, building a deck, stripping paint with a vibrating rotary stripper and nothing has fazed it. The band may not be to my taste, but it soldiers through sweat and spray from a power washer and dried off quickly. Using the stop watch while driving is a piece of cake and the countdown timer has been extremely useful in the kitchen. I do wish this Pathfinder had been ruggedized to match the G-Shock and given the same resin case. And I'd be delirious if Casio would figure out that alarms should be optionally audible or vibrating or both, as is the case with cell phones.

Only time will tell how well this Pathfinder will hold up, but so far, so good. If asked today would I buy it again, knowing its plusses and minuses, the answer would be "Yes."

(More customer reviews)I recently received this watch as a gift, as I already owned a Casio Pathfinder PAW1300G-1V (the earlier model), and it was thought that I would appreciate the upgrade.

In short, this is a nice watch, but there aren't that many features over the PAW1300 line to justify the increased size.Unfortunately, in spite of these new features, I find that I still go back to the PAW1300 as my daily watch, simply because it's a better package as a whole.

There are three major new features in the PAW1500 series that are not in the PAW1300:

-- Tide calculator
-- Moon phase calculator
-- Water resistant to 200m (instead of 100m)

The increased water resistance is terrific, as this turns the Pathfinder into an actual diving watch, instead of a mere snorkeling watch.But the other two features, in my opinion, are underwhelming, and the cost in the module's case-size are quite great.

To whit:the PAW1300 is 47.4mm round and 11.5mm thick.The PAW1500 is 51mm round and 13.9mm thick.This may not sound like a big difference, but side-by-side, it's palpable.Before obtaining this watch, the PAW1300G-1V was the largest one I owned (in a close tie with the Seiko Orange Monster).Now this watch completely dwarfs it.It's so big, I feel like I can use this watch to deflect bullets, Wonder-Woman-style.

(If you like big watches, then don't listen to me.If you don't care, but want this watch anyway, then get ready for the predictable, "Good thing that watch is water-resistant to 200 meters, because you'll need it when that watch drags you down to the bottom of the ocean"-type jokes from your friends, and even strangers.)

Additionally, the 1500PAW has some shortcuts, like the countdown timer.The PAW1500 only has a "yacht" timer, which means that you can count down only from a maximum of 60 minutes.Instead, the PAW1300 has a full 24-hour countdown timer, which is something I use frequently.To find this feature crippled in the PAW1500 was a disappointment.(Also, the altimeter only has a 20-record capacity in the PAW1500 compared to the 40 records in the PAW1300, but I don't think many people will be affected by this.)

The PAW1500 does have one minor pro that I should mention:the information is better-displayed than it is on the PAW1300.Despite the watch's large size, there is technically less space in the LCD display for numeric/text/icon information, but to me the information is presented with a cleaner layout and is more intuitive to read.I.e., I think it makes the best of what it has, and I wish that the PAW1300 had done a better job in this regard.

In short:if you are looking to get a cool outdoor-gizmo watch, this one will deliver heaps of features in spades.The solar power is awesome, and once you have atomic syncing, you'll never go back.The other features, when you learn how to use them, are extremely powerful in combination.

Still, I would advise that you be honest with yourself.Do you really need 200m water resistance, and calculators for tides and moon-phases?(And do you really want a watch the size of a beverage coaster?)If not, then I would recommend that you take a look at the PAW1300 series.It's considerably cheaper, and the size is less obnoxious.

(The PAW1300G-1V in particular is noteworthy in that the band is not integrated with the case, but can be swapped out for standard one-piece 22mm bands, like the Zulu or NATO straps.)

There have been many generations of Pathfinder watches over the past several years, and to me, the PAW1300 feels like the golden version:the Pathfinder done right (well 90% right).Unfortunately, the PAW1500 feels like an awkward, next-generation compromise in order to pack in those few extra features.Maybe the PAW1600 will be an improvement.

As a final note:I see a lot of reviews for the Casio Pathfinders complaining about the lack of accuracy.Please note that these watches need to be calibrated to local conditions if you want them to be truly accurate, and even still, you should fully understand how the features work (and the basic science behind them) if you want to get the best use of these watches.If you are looking for a zero-maintenance, GPS-quality dashboard for you wrist, I would recommend looking at the Garmin Foretrex 101 (while a terrific piece of equipment, it's not solar-powered, and will require changing the AAA batteries every 10 hours).

(More customer reviews)I have admired the Casio altimeter/barometer/compass pathfinders for several years.But I never cared for the huge size.

I wanted their functions in a smaller, lighter watch.When Casio introduced the PAW1300T-7V, I decided I would try it as a replacement for my aging Luminox Navy Seal watch. I needed a watch that was fairly light and easily readable in the dark.The Luminox had fit that bill perfectly with the Tritum capsules on the hands at at the hour marks.But over time those capsules loose their luminosity.Also batteries have to be replaced.The prospect of a solar powered, rechargable watch that automatically corrected itself with the Atomic Clock signal was an added benefit.

I fly for an EMS helicopter service for a living.Half of my shifts are night shifts.This watch works very well for quick time checks with its auto-illumination feature.I have found if I calibrate the altimeter and barometer with local conditions that the altimeter function is very accurate, usually within 20-40 feet of the calibrated altimeters in my helicopter.I frequently check the watch against the altimeters when we are flying.Dual time zones means I can leave the secondary time zone on UTC for filing filght plans.The temperature function is not of any real value to me as it is greatly affected by body proximity.But it is accurate if the watch is removed from the body for about 30 minutes.The alarms work well but the alarm tones are too soft for my ears after flying turbine engined aircraft for almost 40 years.

So, a quick recap: Automatic self-correcting time snychronization, Solar powered/recharged, Excellent automatic self-illumiation, Accurate altimeter and compass functions when calibrated for local conditions.It smaller than previous PAW's and lighter, especially in the Titanium version.I was just thinking the other day that I have been using Casio watches for the last 30 years. (I just put a battery in one of the oldest and it still works great!) I have always liked their layout and user interface.This newest Pathfinder of mine is no exception.It is easy to use, easy to set.If you like Casios, for the money, it is hard to beat this watch, especially on Amazon!

(More customer reviews)I've had it about a month and I'm very happy with it.The altitude/barometer sensor is accurate provided you give it a good initial reference, which I always do when climbing/hiking.I've read some complaints that the altitude is not accurate.But one should try to understand that outside air pressure can change with altitude and/or temperature.Cold air is more dense and pushes on the sensor harder than warm air.So if a cold front rolls in while I am on my climb, the altitude is going to read a bit lower than actual (as if I was further down in more dense air).Likewise, a warm front will cause the sensor to read a bit higher.Either of these situations is often obvious as you will feel & see a change in the weather around you.ALL pressure-based altitude sensors have this vulnerability.That's why pilots constantly adjust their altimeters based on local sea-level barometric pressure data along their path.The best thing you can do is set an initial reference before you climb and be advised of local forecasts.Just common sense stuff really.The compass is plenty accurate enough for routine navigation, and a good backup to the GPS in the canyons and back-country.

I've read other reviews about the alarm not being very loud on some pathfinders.This one seems quite loud - haven't slept through it yet and I use it every day.All the features are very easy to figure out - never had to crack open the manual (but I did anyways).It syncs up every night with the atomic clock, no problem (Houston, TX).Based on the specs, I thought it was going to look monstrous on my wrist but it doesn't.Looks really good to me.I did have to pull out several links to get the right fit (more on this below).

The watch is very light! for it's size.The band is a nice satin gray titanium with an effective locking mechanism on the clasp.Very comfortable, doesn't pull hairs, etc.PLEASE NOTE that even though the product specifications above state that the "case material" is titanium, it isn't.There seems to be quite a bit of misleading internet info regarding the case material.To me, the case appears to be an assembly of stainless steel (back), mystery metal (black knurled ring around the face - maybe aluminum) and plastic/resin (all the gray-ish part).I have to admit that, based on the description, I thought all the gray-ish stuff would be titanium.A little disappointment there but not much.Actually the case still looks new, it's the satin finish on the titanium band that scratches/scuffs quite easily.Some will probably cry about this.I am of a practical sort and this to me is a tool.I actually enjoy the battered, well-used look of my adventure gear.I'm very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this watch to others.Ordered it from Amazon one afternoon, had it the next morning with free overnight shipping.Practically instant gratification.

TITANIUM BAND ADJUSTMENT:
I'm adding this because it took a while searching goog to find out how to do this.Basically you need a pair of needle nose pliers and one of those larger paper clips.Using the paper clip held by pliers, you push the pin on the link IN about 1/8" in the direction indicated by the arrow on the inside of the band.Then grab the pin with the pliers where it's sticking out on the other side and pull it out with a steady action.Do this over a cookie sheet or something with edges.This is important!!! - There is a tiny metal tube that sits inside the hole in the smaller (male) side of the link.Do not lose this - it acts as the locking mechanism to hold that pin in place.To re-assemble - replace the tube in the hole if it fell out, align the links and push the pin back through in the direction of the arrow.Good idea to use the paper clip and pliers to counter sink the pin a bit so that it's equal on both ends.This should all make sense when you have it in front of you.This procedure may sound intimidating but it's really pretty easy.Just be thankful you heard about that tiny metal tube beforehand.

(More customer reviews)I've owned a lot of great watches over my 30 years of adulthood -- from inexpensive Timexes to my beloved Movado -- but THIS ONE is SOMETHING SPECIAL! Why "special"? Because, simply, it does everything it is advertised to do; and it does well, and with a touch of class!

Casio obviously put a lot of thought into the design of this watch and its features. The digital compass is the snappiest and most accurate I have found in a watch. The altimeter is a gem....accurate to within 5 meters (or about 20 feet). The barometer is quite sensitive and the trend graph on the watch face has proven to be very useful. The thermometer works great and, if kept a short distance from the warming effects of the skin, is very accurate and sensitive. The atomic clock update works like a charm here in Virginia.....takes about 3 minutes for an accurate "fix" each night. The motion sensor that turns on the face light in dark areas when you tilt the watch towards your face is terrific....especially in a dark car when you can't take your hands off the wheel to check the time....but the watch face lights up as you tilt your arm towards your face. Now how cool is that????!!!!

A couple of lessons learned since I brought this gem home: READ the owner's manual! Yes, it's complex and will take a couple of hours to go through carefully....but it will save you endless frustration and will tailor this watch exactly to your own needs and desires. It's a VERY complex watch.....but once you get it set up (ie, power-use modes; metric or English measurements; tides set to your beach, etc....), it becomes an incredibly useful tool that you will be consulting frequently throught each day and night.

A second lesson learned: follow the instructions and CAREFULLY calibrate your "reference altitude" and the barometer. The best instructions for doing this, in tandem, and taking into account ambient temperature, is critical and is well-laid out towards the END of the instruction manual....in the "Reference" section. Accurate calibration of the altimeter and the barometer are dependent on the ambient temperature....so read those instructions....they are well-written and take you step-by-step through the short process.

This watch may look big.....but it's not as big as some other watches I have owned. It's thinner than the G-Shocks.....and sits on my very lean wrist quite nicely. The watch is designed to be worn OUTSIDE long-sleeve clothing to allow proper charging of the solar battery....and be most useful as a reference instrument! When wearing short-sleeve shirts or T-s, I put a 1" sports wristband on my wrist first....then put the watch over it. Works like a champ.....and tends to keep the thermometer, barometer, altimeter a whole lot more accurate with the slight seperation from body temperature. (I use the Under Armour 1" Performance Wristbands under the watch.....and they disappear beneath the watch...but allow the watch to sit very confortably and securely on your wrist....yet not add any significant "bulk." You can find them here at Amazon (good price!) and in sporting goods stores.)

Bottom line: if you enjoy cutting-edge technical gadgets that work REAL WELL.....AND serve a very useful purpose.....AND enjoy top-notch quality......AND great support from the folks at Casio (check out their website!).....this is the watch for you. It's gem!

(More customer reviews)I have admired (well, lusted after, actually) the Pathfinder series of watches since they first came out.Imagine a watch that can do everything except fire lasers and talk to satellites--the Pathfinders fit this well.I like this particular version because of the slimmer-than-normal face and the reverse LCD screen.Very sharp looking and very easy to use (at least as far as watches that do everything under the sun can be to use).

Unless you are in bright light a lot, I recommend turning off the auto-light-up option; each use of the light requires about 5 minutes of direct exposure to sunlight or several hours of office lighting to recharge from.The light only comes on when you move your arm into the classic "what time is is" pose, and then stays lit for only about 2 seconds.I sleep with my watch on (I'm in Iraq--the less I have to grope for in the dark, the better), and I apparently activate it a lot while I sleep.

The barometer, thermometer, and compass are all very accurate once you calibrate them--make sure you are wearing it when you calibrate for temperature.

A great watch that fits well and looks sharp.

Atomic Timekeeping for Superb Accuracy
The Pathfinder provides micro-second accuracy with multi-band atomic timekeeping that picks up a time calibration signal from anywhere in the world and updates the watch's settings automatically. The Pathfinder features five daily alarms, a countdown timer, and an hourly time signal. The world time function includes 29 time zones (30 cities), a city code display, and a daylight saving on/off function. The automatic calendar is pre-programmed to the year 2099.
Tough Solar Power Eliminates Need for a Battery
You'll never have to worry about changing the battery thanks to the Pathfinder's Tough Solar technology. The battery is automatically charged by light, both indoor and outdoor. The Pathfinder has a solar cell and a special rechargeable, secondary battery that is charged by the electrical power produced by the solar cell. The watch will perform for five months on a single full charge.
Automatic Electro-Luminescent Display for Easy Viewing
The watch's read-outs can be viewed in any light, thanks to the Pathfinder's automatic, EL (electro-luminescent), adjustable backlit digital display with afterglow. Two high-intensity LEDs make the face exceptionally bright, and an auto light means that when you tilt the Pathfinder toward your face, the LEDs automatically light up for nighttime viewing.
Barometer, Altimeter, and Thermometer Readings
With the Pathfinder's barometer, you can predict changing weather patterns as they occur around you. The barometer takes readings every two hours and stores them automatically, graphically displaying the barometric pressure from the past 26 hours. The display ranges from 260 to 1,100 hPa (7.65 to 32.45 inHg) with changeovers from hPa to inHg.
The watch's altimeter can help you gauge the time you'll need to reach the summit. The altimeter checks and displays the altitude every two minutes and stores readings with the temperature every 15 minutes. The graphing function positions you with respect to your target altitude, while an alarm alerts you as you approach your mark. You can record up to 40 sets of data with each record, displaying the month, date, and time. The altimeter's measuring range is from -700 to 10,000 meters (-2,300 to 32,800 feet).
The Pathfinder also features a built-in thermometer that displays and checks the temperature every five minutes. The display can be converted from Celsius to Fahrenheit and measures temperatures from -10 to 60 degrees C (14 to 140 degrees F). So whether you're hiking through the Grand Canyon or snowshoeing in the Rockies, the Pathfinder has you covered.
Sporty, Durable Design
This sports watch is durably designed with a stainless steel case, round black resin bezel, durable mineral crystal, and black resin band with a secure buckle clasp. Buttons flank the bezel and allow easy access to the watch's sensors. Yellow and white concentric stick indexes on the watch bezel indicate barometric pressure, receiving capability, battery power, and more. The black dial changes with each mode and provides easy-to-read recordings, including graphs and tables. This timepiece is powered by Japanese-quartz movement and is water-resistant to 330 feet (100 M).
