(More customer reviews)I love watches and I have a lot of outdoor and pilot watches. Unless you are a fanatic like me, it's not likely you would have any reason to find fault with this one. I LOVE this watch!!! I wear it for days on end and I hate to take it off to give another one a chance to get out of the house. I am a pilot and I need a good pilot's Zulu time (GMT) watch. The bottom line is that if this is what you need, it comes down to the Suunto Observer, the Rolex Explorer, the Alpina 300x4A6,the Torgoen T5 and this one. I don't own a Torgoen T5 but I wish I had bought it instead of the T6. I do own the others.

This one ROCKS because of the Tritium luminescent dial. It glows all night and does not give out after a few hours of darkness like the others do. If you wake up at 4AM and want to know what time it is, it'll gladly tell you. The watch is heavy, solid, good looking and it has a great heavy metal band.

One criticism is that the date is too small and it's hard to read because it is small and it has white lettering on a black background even though the background of the face is black. Not a big complaint but I have yet to find the perfect watch. That's why I have so many.

For overall no BS pilot functionality go with the Suunto digital (Altitude,barometer, zulu time, compass, stopwatch, timer, sturdy construction; but with a fragile band, expensive to replace). For great looks go with the Rolex, natch, if you can afford it, but it's got a mechanical mechanism and I like quartz because it's much more accurate. For looks and GMT functionality and overall value, go with either the H3 or the Alpina, with a slight edge to the H3 because of the tritium and its outdoorsiness or perhaps to the Alpina for better formal looks and date dial, whichever you value more.

(More customer reviews)I have handled many automatics the past few years. I finally settled on an Orient Mako. Orient fans were fanatic about it. They claimed it kept good time and was the most stylish watch for the price. Maybe so. I did find it annoying that I had no Idea when the power would run out as I dont wear my watches all the time. Also, It seemed I was constantly setting the time.

Something I have had NO PROBLEMS with on my new Orient. The YFH04001B airplane concept is precise. I haven't had to set the time since I got it (two months ago), and I never run out of power thanks to the 40/hr power reserve indicator. Since I fly occasionally on the weekends this watch was a perfect fit (and all the talk among my flying friends). I would have to say If I had to buy another Automatic I would def. stick with an Orient and Possibly a star because of the precision time keeping, the awesome looks, the power reserve indicator, and of course the not so ridiculously high price of say a swiss model.

The instruments of an airplane are well reflected in the dial (face) of the watch.The middle of the dial looks like a cross landing strip.When looking at the dial itself, you can imagine the exhilarating thrill of a pilot just before landing on a runway.Even the power reserve indicator embodies a fuel gauge of a plane.
What you are looking at is a mechanical watch.This means that there are no battery capacitors and that the watch is powered by motion.Pilots are able to identify how much power is left in their plane by their fuel gauge.Likewise, the power reserve indicator tells the owner how much power is left in the watch in units of hours.
Notice how the design integrates a second-hand indicator like an altitude meter.Furthermore, Orient designed this watch so that the stainless steel piece on the center of the dial comes out of the crystal glass to emphasize the nose of an airplane.As a result, the hour and minute indicator bear a resemblance to propellers.The hour and minute indicators, as well as the time indicator, are luminescent so that you are able view the time in the dark.Since the case is a semi-skeleton, the owner is able to look into the mechanics of the watch just as an engineer can view the engine of a plane.The font for this watch is very industrial to emphasize the thriving industrial era of the 1950's.
On the side of the watch, you will see that the bezel (the grooved ring of the watch) is matte finished while the rest of the case comes in finished metal.What sets apart this watch from the rest of the watches is the turbine-engine look of the crown.The crown is basically the piece on the side of the watch that allows the owner to set the time.The exhibition caseback (glass piece located on the back of the case) also follows the turbine-engine look.Another interesting feature that you will notice about the dressing of the caseback followed by dot linings depicts the surface plating of a plane.There are a total of 3 variations to this collection.The only difference amongst the three is the color on the dials: orange, navy blue, and black.
The clasp of this watch is a deployment clasp, which guarantees that the watch will stay on and not come off unintentionally.The first two links of the stainless steel metal band are tapered followed by untapered links.This particular watch has a remarkable looking design on its band links.The watch has a blend of matte and finished metal links to symbolize the combination of steel plating used on a 1950's airplane.Notice that the watch's band is very intriguing in its design.This is intended to reflect that mechanical look of the pre-modern airplane model into the design of the watch.Not only does this look offer a creative side, but the combination of the blended links with the stainless steel construction gives a 3-dimensional effect.

(More customer reviews)I have to say that I probably never would have bought this watch if Perfect Timing had not been offering it at such a good price. I always wanted to get a Swiss made GMT in my collection, but could never justify the additional cost for what seems like a relatively simple complication (compared to a chronograph, for example). But I am glad I waited until the right GMT watch came around, this is a beautiful piece, extremely well made, subtle appointments everywhere around the dial, bracelet, and case. Oris is a highly discounted brand by many grey market sellers, so shop it around before you plunk down the cash. But once you do, you will not be disappointed with this watch. For about half of what you would pay for an Omega Seamaster, you can get this watch with the GMT complication, and the quality is every bit as good.

(More customer reviews)This one represents the best balance of what is right with Panerai.Superb workmanship, excellent legibility, and style.

Panerai makes an incredible watch by any metric, but the wormanship alone justifies their reputation.Fit and finish, and technical excellence in the movements; They are on a par with more expensive watches, and clearly superior to most of the more modestly priced watches.This one has the GMT complication; an extra hand to indicate 24 hour time, either in local or a second time zone.I get a lot of use out of this sort of feature as I routinely coordinate with people in different timezones and travel.

The legibility of the design is of special interest to those of us with less than perfect vision.More than once, the advantages of the classic Panerai designs for aging eyes has been discussed, and I can only echo previous observations.The contrast of the hands and markings against the dial, and the simplicity of the design make these watches exceptionally readable even when the wearer isn't quite ready to acknowledge the need for bifocals.

And Italian style.You might not be fond of Italian food, the reputation of Italian cars' maintenance needs may make you antsy, but you cannot deny that the Italians have set the standard for style since the Renaissance.The Panerai is true to this tradition.A simple dial and hands, a beautifully contured case, and sublime simplicity in the strap make Panerai timeless.At 40mm, this one is also a bit smaller than most of their line, only accentuating the clean appearance and quietly competent functionality.

This one is still out of my price range, but continues to inspire.
