Citizen Men's JY0064-00L Eco-Drive Blue Angels Skyhawk A-T Chronograph Rubber Strap Watch Review

Very nice timepiece. Unfortunately, you will have to cut the band to adjust its length. Also, the different sub-functions (e.g. alarms, timer, stopwatch, etc.) are accessed by pulling the twist pin out one stop. This is sometimes difficult while the watch is worn. Despite this, I still love it.

Citizen Men's BL5400-52E Eco-Drive Stainless Steel Sport Watch Review

Citizen Men's BL5400-52E Eco-Drive Stainless Steel Sport Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a brand new model from Citizen and it is a beautiful watch. It has many of the amazing features as other top Citizen Eco Drive watches.Specifically the Perpetual Calendar, Alarm, Chronograph, Dual Time, and Slide Rule.In this review, I will comment on each feature as well as the overall quality and aesthetics of the watch.

I was looking for a large faced aviator watch and saw many models from Citizen and Seiko. This modelhas a large 48mm diameter face which really catches the eye.The case thickness at 12mm is also not too thick, which was one of my concerns with other large faces watches. It has 4 separate knobs/buttons which have a low profile but are smooth and well finished. The buttons on the right do not dig into your hand like other watches with large knobs. The grooved ring around the face of the watch really adds a lot of BLING that is not overwhelming and very classy.

The watch has an good weight to it so you better like heavy watches. It screams quality whenever you look at it closely and press the buttons. The perpetual calendar ensures that you never need to change the date for different months and leap years. The dual time function allows you to display the time in another time zone that is in 1-hour increments.Unfortunately, it will not display time zones in 30-min increments, so if your second time zone is 4.5 hours behind your main time zone then the watch would not be able to display the exact time in the second time zone. You have to either set it at 4 hours or 5 hours apart from the first time zone.

The alarm and chronograph are selected by rotated the crown to select the desired function. The Alarm rings for 15 seconds and is audible if the watch is near to you.The chronograph can measure time up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds, with an accuracy of 1/20 of a second.

The slide rule allows you to do calculations such as ratios, multiplication, division, and percentages. You can also convert from metric to imperial units by simply moving the dial on the left to the desired position. You will have to download a manual to learn the slide rule.Even if you don't want to use it, you will find that the slide rule makes the watch look refined and technical.I supposed the sliderule could have been implemented as a rotating bezel as on other watches, but this model uses a rotating knob. This adds an extra knob to the watch but ensures that the sliderule is under the glass and not exposed.I think this is more classe that having sliderules, tachymeters, etc. that are exposed on the outer ring of the watch as rotating bezels.

Citizen Men's JY0000-02E Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch Review

Citizen Men's JY0000-02E Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This watch has a great set of features that are especially good for travellers and those who work "in the field".All in all, I think this is one of Citizen's best high end multi featured watches. The functionality makes sense, it is easy to use, and except for its large size, the watch has a functional, sturdy look that is not overly gimicky, or pointlessly flashy.

It's very large size (45mm Diam excl. crown x 15mm thick) is, in my opinion, its major drawback, making the watch a bit on the heavy and clunky side. The size does, however, make it easy to read.Below is my list of its Pro's / Con's

Pro's:
- Case Accepts standard 22m wide straps, so you can change out the rubber strap for your own favorite if you want.
- 200m water resistant so it can be used for sport idving and water sports
- Full timing features (Day, Month, Year, Chronograph, countdown timer, wolrd time extra dial for UTC / other timezone)
- Alarms:2 world time alarms and a countdown alarm
- Solar powered: No battery changes needed, this is only a pro if the rechargeable battery / solar system lasts a long time
- Visibility:Large easy to read dial.Luminous hands and markers, LCD backlight for night visibility.
- "Safe" buttons: The crown and 2 pushers operate such that it is nearly impossible to accidentally change modes or alter a setting. The crown must be pulled out to change modes / change settings. Also the buttons seem sturdy.
- Accurate: Radio corrected time from Atomic clock assures accuracy to probably within 1 second
- Slide rule bezel useful for multiplication, division, time and rate problems, conversion

Cons:
- 45mm diam x 15mm thick case is big and sits too high off my wrist making it heavy and easy to bump into things.I also think it makes the watch a little geeky (OK for me since I am a geek already).however, I don't think all of the watches features could be packed into a much smaller case.
- Main time dial doesn't have any numbers next ot the markers.Makes it a little tougher to tell time at a glance and harder to tell timein the dark (is my watch upsdie down?).
- Calendar mode only shows the date for the "away" city not the home city. You must set your away city to bethe same as the home city to get the local date. This is easy to do, but still cuts functionality. If citizen would move their label and make full digital window for the home city it would solve this issue.
- Countdown timer max's out at 99 min.Why not make it 24 hr like the chronograph.I could definitely use a longer limit on the timer (cooking, "met bakc in 2 hours", etc.)
- Backlight not useable in timer or chronograph modes.(not sure how to fix this, but it would be nice to have it)
- Digital window is a bit small, but still legible
- Case back is snap on, making it difficult to open yourself (althought there isn't much need to given no battery changes).

Citizen Men's JR3080-51L Eco-Drive Blue Angels Watch Review

Citizen Men's JR3080-51L Eco-Drive Blue Angels Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this watch because I wanted a solar-powered watch with analog-digital display (plus the usual things that go with a digital watch, i.e. alarms, stopwatch, and countdown timer). The only analog-digital solar watches I found included the Citizen Skyhawk, Citizen Sailhawk (JR4000 and JR4010), Citizen JR0006 (discontinued, but still available on some sites), the Casio atomic WVA430xxx (there are several incarnations, thus the 'x's'), Casio WVA510x, Casio AWS90x, and the Casio PAG60 line (watches that sport barometer, thermometer, and compass functions). The Casios (those I could find in stores) all seemed rather bulky and "plasticky."The discontinued JR0006 had a more primitive power management system and lacked a coordinated analog and digital display, and I didn't need the Sailhawk's yacht racing timer.I went with the Skyhawk in stainless, because I had read that titanium was more prone to surface injuries and I didn't think the weight would be a problem. The watch looks great and, indeed, the weight doesn't bother me, even though my benchpressing limit is probably about 20 pounds. The power save function really works. A moment after I took it out of the box, the hands started to spin around until they came to the right time; it had kept the time correctly for however many months or years it had been sitting in that box! It is NOT true, as many people have written, that this watch lacks luminous coatings, or that they lose their glow very quickly. The coatings seem very similar in brightness to those on my Seiko Diver's watch (which are very bright), and remain visible all night long. However, it IS true that the luminous regions are very small in area, so the overall impression is that the watch is a bit dim at night. The circular slide rule on the bezel is very cute. I'm not going to need it to calculate fuel consumption, but I will use it to calculate tips. There are a few things, however, that make this watch less than perfect.First, as others have observed, the watch face is attractive, but not particularly readable. The 24 hour and UTC subdials are adorable, but I can't see that I will ever need either (for any application that requires UTC, I would want to read the time off the more accurate digital display), and if the subdials weren't there the minute marks could have been made larger and more readable.Second, there's no backlight for the digital display, so the digital functions are useless at night. (Casio somehow manages to have a backlight in their solar-powered watches.) Third, it only works with full-hour time zones, so the watch isn't going to work properly in those parts of the world with half-hour time zones. Fourth, in most modes the two buttons are given over to the change-time zone function. If you want to do things like set the alarm or the countdown timer, you have to fiddle with the crown. But the crown is so beautifully protected that you pretty much have to remove the watch from your wrist before you can manipulate it. Frankly, I might need to change time zones once every couple of months, but I need to set alarms a couple of times a day, and it would have been better if the commonest operations had been the easiest to perform.Fifth, the countdown timer only goes to 99 minutes, which is too short for a lot of timer applications. The timer function display is actually redundant; Citizen might have been able to make better use of the LCD display to allow one to set countdown times in hours and minutes. Sixth, the alarm is very quiet. It won't wake anyone from sleep, and probably won't be heard in a noisy environment, either. In contrast, the alarm on my old Timex Expedition is many times louder, goes into a more insistent mode if ignored, and repeats after an interlude of a few minutes if not cancelled. In sum, buy this watch if you want an attractive analog-digital, solar-powered watch, but recognize that there is a lot of room for improvement, and something better is bound to come out, someday.

Citizen Men's JY0000-53E Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch Review

Citizen Men's JY0000-53E Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Skyhawk A-T
Model: JY0000-53E

PROS:

I bought this watch as I finally came to the realization that I needed a timepiece that did everything and required no upkeep. No battery changes are therefore required as the solar panel face is more than sufficient to keep the internal batteries charged in regular use (fully charged, the watch is rated to operate 6 months without sunlight and the watch easily stays fully charged even in regular office use - there is a charge indicator on the face).

The most important (and costly) feature of the watch is that it keeps perfect time. It permanently stays within one second of actual time as it has a radio receiver that automatically resets it to the exact time every day in the US through a radio broadcast from the US atomic clock. Europe and Japan have similar broadcasts from their atomic clocks and the watch can be set to receive from those broadcasts if you are in those areas. Note that most of Canada, Mexico and Eastern China are also covered by the aforementioned broadcasts but some areas at the outer rim of Europe are not. I would suggest that if you are in doubt about whether you are in range of atomic clock broadcasts that you look at the full instructions for the watch which can be found on the citizen site under "technical information" (it has maps showing coverage areas).

Given the additional expense for the atomic time reception feature, it would be pointless to buy this watch outside of those areas that can receive atomic clock broadcasts as one of the other Skyhawk watches would be a better choice. Without any radio reception, the watch is rated to no more than 15 seconds loss per month so should you travel outside of reception areas the watch will still keep excellent time.

Reception of atomic time broadcasts in the US has been very good, despite the fact I live towards the east coast and the time broadcast emanates from Colorado. Nine out of ten nights the watch updates and I have never found the watch to be more than half a second off from actual time after several months of use.

As this is a pilot's watch, one of the greatest features is that you can easily and quickly move between time zones (without having to reset the watch) and it would be useful for anyone who travels or is calling people in foreign countries (so you don't accidentally call them at 3 am). You can display one time on the hands and a different time zone on the LCD if you wish. Two dials also display UTC and 24 hour time.

Countdown timer, date, chronograph and two different alarms exist on the watch, using the LCD to work and set. A significant improvement over previous versions of the watch is a backlight on the LCD. The slide rule on the outside does permit rudimentary multiplication and division, as well as calculations relating to some airplane functions. The watch is waterproof down to 600 ft so you don't have to take it off while swimming or in the shower (note: this is not a diving watch and it really does not meet the requirements for diving).

All around this is an extremely useful watch if you need to know the exact time, may travel a lot and have some interest in the rest of the functions. It is a good looking, quality timepiece, very solidly made and I would highly recommend it, but you need to take into account some drawbacks stated below before a purchase.

CONS:

A review would not be a review without stating any negative aspects of the watch so here they are. First of all it is big and somewhat heavy, being made totally out of stainless steel (no titanium version is available at the time of this review and it would be worth the extra price should one become available). Even by the standard of a diving watches (which are usually pretty big) this is a big watch. It's somewhat thick but really the diameter of the face is what might be considered large. On anyone with a slight frame, it may appear oversized and be uncomfortable. For those who are used to wearing all-metal diving watches it does not take long to adjust to the size and weight. For those preferring slim, elegant dress watches, this watch would be a bad choice.

The watch is also quite complicated (as it does so much) but it does come with excellent documentation and even an interactive setting instruction disk. Intitial setup takes some time, but once that is done you soon get used to using its features. If you are not the type to spend at least a little time learning how to make best use of the watch this may not be your timepiece.

One feature that I am surprised Citizen kept on this watch was the requirement you pull out the crown to set some things. This is somewhat annoying and I worry about the durability of constant use of the crown in that manner. Although the strap is very solidly made and quite comfortable, you can only adjust it by adding and removing links. Once you realize you can use a thumb tack to push out the link pins (in the direction of the arrows stamped on the reverse of each link), you can adjust it yourself but it's a fiddle (NOTE: the pins are split at one end (the NON-split end going back in first). Make sure you put them in the right way round, and back in through the side of the links they came out).

If you are looking for the cheapest price on this watch make sure you buy it from an authorized dealer (even some ebay stores are) as the warranty probably is not valid if you buy it from someone else.

Without a doubt, for those interested in this type of watch with the aforementioned functions and features, it's a fantastic watch. For those of slim build or not used to wearing the bulk of a large diving watch, this may not be a good choice.

Citizen Men's JY0005-50E Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch Review

Citizen Men's JY0005-50E Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got mine the other day.I own four other Citizen Eco-drive models. They've all been trouble-free and continue to function to this day.The oldest is an 8-year old titaniam diver model.I wanted this new Citizen because it's all black and it's atomic clock accurate. This is a huge watch, but seems to sit well on my smaller wrist.Resizing the band was a bit of a pain as the pins are rather hard to push out. Also, the band is not very flexible, so it doesn't fit as well on a smaller wrist. The one thing that really stood out to me was that the clasp on this watch is of much lower quality than my older citizens with metal bands. This one is made of stamped stainless steel. All my other Citizens have clasps made of thicker solid steel. The watch case itself is solid steel and appears very solid. However, the back is snap-on...eek!Citizen has really gone cheap here.I'd expect that a watch at this price level to have a screw-in back...not a snap-on like a Timex! All my previous Citizen's had screw-in backs.I know that the Japan-only titanium version of this watch has a screw-in back and a solid titanium clasp. This watch is coated black and only time will tell how durable it is.I suspect that eventually the black on the clasp will start wearing off since that's usually where most of the rubbing takes place. The crystal is made of mineral glass and is slightly domed, so at certain angles, you will get reflections.Overall, I love this watch because it looks great and is super accurate.I just wish that Citizen didn't cut down on the quality of the clasp and back to save a few bucks. One other annoying thing is that to access the various functions of the watch (calendar, countdown, chronograph etc), you have to pull out the crown and rotate it.A bit annoying if you use the functions a lot.

Pros:
- very nice looking watch
- fit and finish are top-notch
- bracelet is made from solid links. Not cheap folded metal.
- 200m water resistant
- bezel rotates smoothly
- picks up atomic clock signal in Japan, Europe and North America
- LCD display is backlit, so you can see it at night at the press of a button.
- Eco-drive a proven and reliable technology

Cons:
- cheap clasp
- snap-on back
- metal band not very flexible so if you have a small wrist, you might have large gaps on the sides of the wrist.
- black coating is not protected, so it will eventually wear off.
- crystal prone to reflections
