(More customer reviews)First, let me give a compliment to Amazon on this one.I ordered this watch with ease using the new Amazon app for the iPhone and things could not have been easier. The Amazon price was very competitive with what I had found elsewhere. Amazon had the watch delivered to me in a few days without any problems or concerns.
Now for the watch.I typically wearan older Rolex GMT Master II and I have had a Panerai 243.The Luminox is a bit thicker than a Rolex and it might fit rather snug on your wrist if you wear it with a dress shirt. More like the Panerai, the Luminox is a thick watch that looks great in a more casual or athletic setting.I bought the Luminox just to wear to the gym, but I have to say I have worn it more than my Rolex since I got it in the mail.I am sure the "new" will wear off soon, but I just love the looks of this watch. Again, it is a thick watch, but it is so light (especially compared to the Rolex) that it is hard for me to tell that it is on my wrist. The rubber strap feels great. The comfort of the rubber strap is one of the things that I love about a Panerai.I like the big, bold look of the Luminox without having to pay the Panerai price ($8,000) to get it.
Aside from the looks, the Luminox has kept great time so far. The watch is water resistant to 200 meters, which did not play a major part in my choosing the watch, but it is good to know I do not have to take it off to swim, shower, etc.I do not dive, but I do use the bezel to time my workouts.
One of my favorite things about the watch is the self-powered illumination on the face of the watch and at the top of the bezel. One my eyes adjust to the darkness, I can see that my watch glows rather brightly. It is somewhat amazing that the watch does this on its own without having to be "charged up" with light to do it. It is supposed to glow like this for a decade or so, which I am sure is longer than I will be able to keep up with the watch.
Actually, it is this self-powered illumination that led Luminox to its success. It seems that after Luminox made its first dive watch in 1993, a Navy procurement officer contacted Luminox and explained their need for the above-referenced luminous technology for use on night missions and asked to have the new dive watch re-engineered to meet their rigorous specifications. After many months of redesigning, the revamped dive watch was offered to the SEAL teams in early 1994, and Luminox went out to the world to offer this same watch to consumers as the Original Navy SEAL dive watch.
As the Navy SEAL Luminox watches go, I prefer the revised 3050 "Colormark" series because they have a 44mm case diameter and are a little bigger than the original 3000 Luminox Navy SEALs watch (43mm).When you compare the faces of the watches, you will see that the newer Colormark Series has a noticeably bigger face and the numbers are easier to read. It is just a better looking, watch.
In sum, this Luminox is a fun, functional, watch with an interesting history. It is not expensive like a Rolex or a Panerai, so buying one is no major life decision.Amazon got me a great deal on the 3055 version with the yellow numbers, and I love it.
